Regarding the design changes

So, a few of you have been sharing your thoughts on the design changes to the movie details view, and I’d like to appoint that here.

I’m pretty happy and satisfied with the portrait look and feel of the movie details view, but I’m not happy with the landscape view. It’s not completed. I’m working on something that looks quite different. It’s still not completed, but here’s an early look at the landscape view for tablets:

As you can see, the design is missing a few things, most notably it’s missing a button or something like it that starts the movie playback. It could be located in one of the corners, but I haven’t tried that yet. I’d love to get some feedback on this design for tablets. I think it could work quite well, at least on larger tablets. Smaller tablets, like the Nexus 7, don’t have as much available screen space, so I don’t think it’s suited for those devices.

I’d love to get your ideas on how I could improve it, especially on smartphones with limited screen estate

  1. Looks very nice and I like it. I think it would look amazing on the TV as well, which is a positive! The only thing missing in that screenshot for me is the TITLE of the movie. I know it’s implied because you actually select the movie to enter this screen, but I think it would be good if you have the title here as well.

    • Totally agree. It’s coming – somehow… 🙂

  2. Agreed on the need to show the movies title. How about making the trailer a tab as well. This will limit the screen space to show the plot. From ‘Runtime’ down, this data could be a forced scroll, meaning you would not see it unless you scrolled the window, this in turn would make the Plot window a bit smaller, showing more Backdrop..

Gotta huge TV waiting to see it on..

    • There’s one major issue by making it smaller in its height: The other tabs will also be smaller. I.e. you’ll have less room to browse through the actors and reviews, and even though the movie description might not take up all the screen estate in the height, the actors tab definitely will in most cases.

  3. To follow the screen shot you have above, you could stop the box where you see Trailer, that looks like it would give you two rows for Actors. That and being able to scroll should be fine right?

    • If I were to stop it at the center of the trailer image, it’d be two rows for Actors. Not sure how it’d work in real life though. Can’t say until I get a Nexus 10 to test it on.

  4. Think that would look good. But where to put the Play button for the movie? What about it being the Backdrop picture, tap it to play..

Oh, just installed Beta from the market and it does not show the screen you show above..

    • I’m thinking about making it the backdrop image.. Just wondering if it’s obvious enough.

Regarding the beta: I know. I did this design just this evening, and it is no way near being finished, so it’s not in the beta.

  5. See your point about the backdrop being obvious enough.

What if the box covered about 1/4 the screen along the entire bottom. Plot can scroll, or auto scroll, Actors would have one long line that could still swipe sideways, trailer to be a popup when Google releases some type of plugin or it just makes the box bigger while playing, this leaves the extreme right of the box for the Movie cover like in the current version as your play button.

  6. looks nice!!! sorry had to give a neg on the previous design because of the backdrop not being the background.
i know it’s not a big deal but as you can see, the presentation seems a lot better because even the empty space doesn’t feel “empty”.

anyway, my suggestion is to put a label on the play button and the watch trailer button. put like: “watch trailer” or “play movie” below the icon like on the previous versions. those were very nice touches in my opinion and i was actually a bit sad those went away because they give me a media player feel 🙂

and a bit of transparency for the top bar could be nice too (but not really needed).

but i’ve got to hand it to you, coming up with a universal design is hard and it’s nice that you accommodate all devices.

ill try to think of something else, but this one looks nice already.

  8. ok here’s something i came up with.
please note before you look at the image:
I only made it from MS powerpoint, so dont school me about photoshop (im too lazy to re-install it) or why it looks weird. but you are free to criticize or suggest about the layout 🙂

im also thinking that probably touching the rating stars would make you go to the reviews tab. it’s not a must have feature but i think that would be cool hehe.

  9. YES that layout posted above by krizz07 (the photo bgtmh4.jpg), looks great. I have been following this app and blog, and have this installed on my Google TV. The text would still be readable on the big screen, same as current version where the tab area (overview actors review) is 1/2 the screen, as compared to the suggested layout by Michell.
This is a beautiful app! keep up the great work Michell!

  10. Looks great.

For the play button, how about using the film DVD cover/poster in the bottom left corner, with the play icon overlayed? Or, when you add the film title, just add the play button next to the title?

  11. Why not make it similar to the current TV shows view? You could have one screen that would basically be the same as the TV show ‘show details’ screen and call it ‘movie details’, and one (perhaps paneled) screen that lists additional information such as trailers, actors and reviews. This would make the entire app more straightforward and unified in its UI.

You could have the cover picture in the ‘details’ screen be the play button. This could also be true for TV shows if there’d be a way for the app to determine what the last viewed episode of that particular show was and continue where you left off.

  12. Just to be clear, the ‘additional information’ screen with trailers, actors and reviews for movies would be where the ‘episodes’ screen is for TV shows.

  13. Hello,

I have just created a quick layout, check it here:

    http://tinypic.com/r/34j9ij6/6

It is based on a 1/3-2/3 “golden ratio”, I have tried to keep it clear. How do you like it Michell?

    • I like your layout, except the bottom where you have the director and other info takes too much space. You can maybe extend the layout on the right all the way to the bottom because the info on the bottom left only takes up that part anyway. Does this make sense?

      • It makes perfect sense. Actually it is just a coincidence that the two columns ends at the same line on the picture because of the length of the text. I have uploaded a new picture that show my idea (and your suggestion) better:

        http://tinypic.com/r/2wh41e1/6

It must be this way to be able to show long text.

        • Exactly! That looks nice.

  14. It would be great to show also some media info in the list of information like: video format (AVI, MKV, ….), audio format (MP3,..), audio bit rate, video bit rate, resolution size, file dimension, audio channels available ……and so

    Reply
    • It might for some users, but most users wouldn’t need it and some would probably even find it annoying. It’s also practically impossible to do without dramatically increasing the size of the installation package, as it would require at least one large 3rd party library, and it’d take *a lot* of time to make that library work with Android. All that effort for displaying video information is simply not worth it for me.

  15. I agree Michell, if I really wanted to know those details I’ll open a file manager.

I kinda liked the above idea of making the details screen look something like the TV screen.

Maybe just the backdrop, Plot and play button with all else being a swipe. It’s not often anyone here reads much past the plot even if that. Most movies are selected due to the title/cover. If one does want to read more it’s an intended move and one that could be on other screens much like you have with the Actors details screens now.

  16. looks very beautiful, but it isn’t practical. Too much wasted space showing the background… I use a 32″ TV connected to an android device… I apreciate more useful info, like the movie description…
