Good stuff is on its way

Hi guys!

In the last post I told you that I’m going to actively post nightly builds. I also told you that I’m going to reserve at least one hour each day for Mizuu. Happy to say that I’ve been keeping both promises. It’ll be some time before the next nightly build is posted, though. I’ve been pretty sick of the inconsistency of the user interface between tablets and phones, so I’ve finally decided to do something about that.

The movie details screen will be the first to change. The new style will be a backdrop image at the top (or left side if you’re in landscape mode), and then a set of three tabs at the bottom (or right side) with the movie overview as well as easier access to actors and reviews. It took some time for me to get the design working and I had a very strange bug that made the application crash pretty much all the time, but I’ve sorted that now and I think the design looks pretty sweet. Also, it’ll work great on all kinds of devices.

I’ve only got the “Actors” tab working as of now, but I’ll hopefully have a complete thing working next week. I’ve also been working on ways to improve the Web videos part of the app, and TV shows will get a similar make-over.

Feel free to let me know what you think.

  1. Wow….. there once was a time when I would receive a new email about Mizuu and be excited. Sadly , no more. I still use it, but could care less about the cosmetic changes it “needs.” I (as I’m sure others) have been waiting for MONTHS for network support. No Joy…….. But, here is ANOTHER EMAIL saying it is being made to LOOK better……. I’m sure I’m not the only one that is VERY DISAPPOINTEND by this new news.

    • I’m not releasing anything unless I’m happy about it. I wasn’t happy about the design. Also, like I’ve told you countless times before, I have no experience with streaming services. I’m learning this stuff from scratch and that takes time. More time than my schedule allows right now.

  2. At least he is making improvements on the app. I’m sure it’s not an easy job, specially if he is doing everything himself. This app has come far.

    • Thanks. It is a lot of work. I’m doing a complete re-write of the application and that kind of thing takes time.

  3. I think it looks nice. Would the backdrop show full screen on landscape?

    • That’s not the idea. I’m thinking that you lose a lot of the image by placing it in the background. I’ll make sure to post an image of what it looks like, when I get it done. I think it’ll be great!

  4. I’m sceptical. The current design is great IMO and all I wish is for you to finish the TV shows layout then release the update to the play store. For instance I can’t edit details of individual episodes yet

    • I don’t really think it’s great. It doesn’t work very well on phones, the tablet UI is pretty poor in portrait mode and I’m also not really digging the need for both backdrop images and cover art images. I really think this will be better. It’ll also be implemented on TV shows.

  5. Oh no no…. I like them both… but got to have the cover art… even if the backdrops are blurred so covering it up a bit doesn’t matter. Makes it feel like a collection rather than just a file… imo anyway

    • Hey, thanks for the feedback. You’re right when you say that it doesn’t look like a collection, but that’s the thing – it’s not a collection. You’re looking at a single item from the collection. You’ve already seen the cover art image in the “collection overview”, and by pressing it, you’ll be presented with a more detailed view of the single item you picked. That’s the idea, anyway.
