Here’s what’s going on

Near the end of December I told you that you could expect the 1.7.6 update around New Year and that obviously hasn’t happened yet. I ran into a few complications which took more time than I thought and to make matters even worse, I won’t have much time for coding the next two weeks as I have a couple of exams I need to prepare for (one of them is programming, actually!). I promise I’ll release it as soon as it’s done and that I’ll work on it when I’ve got some spare time.

Anyway, I just thought I’d give you guys an update on the situation right now. The only thing left for me to do in the 1.7.6 update is to add support for manually identifying TV shows, and I’ve already done quite a bit of work on that. The implementation in 1.7.6 will only make it possible to identify one episode (video file) at a time, and this is because I am planning on re-writing the entire update process with version 1.8. This version will also enable you to manually identify single episodes as well as entire shows. At least that’s the plan.

Regarding NAS support, that’s also coming in version 1.8, but I have some rather sad news. I have searched basically all of the web and asked a lot of questions regarding the possibility of streaming content from a NAS device natively to an Android device, and I am now 99.9 percent sure that there’s only one way to do it without root access. That way is to save a copy of the video locally on the Android device, and then start the video playback while the video is being downloaded to the device. With root access, you can mount a network drive as part of the file system and that’ll work natively without the need for a local file (because the OS thinks it’s a local file), but there’s simply no other way to do it if you want to stream from a NAS without root access. Scratch that. It is possible, but really complicated. I’ll see what I can do.

PS. As some of you might have noticed, this place has been redesigned a bit and you’ll find some new content on the site as well. I’m going to continue making small changes to the website and hopefully give everyone a better experience of it. Maybe even a forum at some point in time – who’s up for that?
