Should I release what I’ve got so far?

The development version of Mizuu has come a long way, but one of the most demanding features has yet to be implemented. Yep, you guessed it – network support. I haven’t got any prior experience with networking from a code perspective, so this is pretty new to me and I’m learning every day. The beta version is currently capable of browsing your network shares, but I’ve had a few reports on issues with Windows and special NAS devices, so it’s not fully working yet.

I’ve mentioned it quite a few times before, but a lot of things have changed in Mizuu and I’ve been dying to show you guys.

I know I’ve promised a million times that the next version would have network support, and I’d rather not break my promise, but I’m uncertain of how long it’ll take to fully implement. I don’t want to keep everyone waiting, especially not if the majority of the users will never use network support. That essentially means that they’re waiting for nothing. Everything else is ready. The list of changes takes up 2½ pages in Word, so it’s quite a bit. Roughly 15,000 lines of code have been changed.

Therefore I ask – should I release what I’ve got so far? Or do you want to wait an uncertain amount of time for all the new changes + network support? Please let me know. It’ll be version 1.7.9 if I release it now.

  3. Sorry for the earlier brief comment, I was in a bit of a rush.

What I meant to say was please release ASAP and then you can continue to take your time on the network portion of the app.

That way you satisfy your users that are excited about the overhaul and get a little extra breathing room on the networking component.

  5. Well, do this release now … Pleaaaase 😉 Network fonctions will come soon, i’m sure about that. You are working to hard to not find a solution.
and on my point of view, your new improvements to increase matching with metadata agents (*) and your bugs solved, are more interesting for most of your/future users.
    Congratulation and thanks for all.
(*) hope that this will solve my problems on french titles.

    • I’ve been working a lot on improving Mizuu’s capabilities to “decrypt” filenames, but it’s still only using http://www.themoviedb.org for movie data. The new version introduces a completely revamped update method, and I want to make sure it’s working without any issues before I add new functionality 🙂

      • Question, will I still be able to use my own local metadata that I’ve attained from another application? I have alot of titles that don’t show in themoviedb or are hard to scrape correctly because they are foreign and pretty obcure. Thanks…

        • If you’re referring to .nfo files – yes! 🙂

          • They are .xml files – not .nfo. And thanks for the quick responses. It’s much appreciated…

        • The comment thread is getting a bit crowded, so can’t reply directly to your comment. Anyway – would you mind sharing an example of the contents of such a file? Mizuu currently only supports .nfo files in the format specified in the FAQ 🙂

  6. I’d also go with the “release what is finished now, continue working on networking for the next version”. Lot’s of great stuff added in the beta and I’m sure everyone would like to see the changes.

Besides, if you release it now, you’ll feel better about taking some extra time to finish up networking support 😉
