Sign up for the beta release of Mizuu 1.8.0

The next update for Mizuu is getting closer to beta status, so I’m looking for beta testers who are willing to test it out and give feedback. The application doesn’t report any kind of technical feedback itself, so it’s essential that you’re able to provide written feedback by e-mail. If you know how to get the stack trace log in the event of an error, that’s even better!

I’ve still got some things to do and little time to do it in, so the beta will start within the next few weeks. You can sign up with this form below. Please mention which devices (Android 3.0+ only) you can test the application on and also if you’re able to test network connectivity (DLNA / NAS support). You can try it on Google TV, but I haven’t been able to test anything and it’s not been developed for that yet, so don’t expect anything. Also - don’t forget to mark the subject “Beta tester”.

By submitting the above form, I’ll get an e-mail with your contact details and description. I won’t get back to you until the beta is ready, so don’t worry if you don’t get a reply. Thanks a lot!

Another preview of what’s to come

One of the rather messy features of Mizuu right now is the Actor view. It allows you to check out actor details - biography, movies and photos. However, it’s not that great at the moment - especially not on smartphones. That’s why I’ve been working on making it better, and I’m ready to share some of the changes with you now. My new approach is adding tabs and making it easier to navigate through the various types of content. Also, you can now press movie covers to launch a website with more details and likewise you can press photo thumbnails to get the original size image.

Here’s what the tablet version looks like (press for a larger view):

And here’s what it looks like on smartphones (press for a larger view):

Like I said, this is just one of many changes. You can find various pointers to other design changes in the above screenshots. Hope you’ll like it!

By the way: I’m postponing the expected release of the upcoming update by a bit. My workload has been increased quite a lot and my studies are also getting more demanding. Anyway, I’m doing all I can when I’ve got the time and I’m usually working most of the night as well.

Video: Upcoming widget changes

I’m making many changes in the next release of Mizuu and widgets will be no exception. Say goodbye to limitations and having to choose between limited layouts and fixed amounts of videos. The new widgets build upon the current design and adds direct access to your entire video library right in the widgets. I’ve made a short video below to demo the changes and compare it with the current implementation. It’s shot on my phone, so apologizes for the low quality. Still a work in progress, but it’ll give you an idea:

The cascading widget will also be updated and will be capable of showing your entire library.

Future versions of Mizuu will likely build even more features upon these changes - i.e. the option of choosing a widget based on your favorites or perhaps a certain genre.

Mizuu - free or paid version?

It’s possible for me to see which search terms people have used to get to the site, and I quite often see queries asking what the difference is between the free and paid version of Mizuu. Thought I’d let you guys know in this short blog post.

The main difference between the free version and paid version is that the free version is ad-supported. It’ll show banner adverts in the four main overviews - Movies, TV Shows, Web Videos and Movie Trailers - and nowhere else. I don’t want the ads to be obtrusive, so they’re only in these places. Also, I fully respect people using ad blockers, so Mizuu won’t show you any images telling you to disable the ad blocker and likewise the layout will just expand and use the space that was reserved for ads.

The paid version also gets faster updates. The paid version has currently received more than 50 updates, while the free version has only been updated around 30 times. If you want updates as soon as possible, the paid version is definitely the way to go.

Also - you can support me by using the paid version. So, to sum it up - here are the advantages of the paid version:

  • No ads.
  • Faster updates.
  • A warm and cuddly feeling for supporting an indie developer.

Yay, 100 reviews!

The paid version of Mizuu just received its 100th review and that marks a wonderful milestone in the development of the application.

Mizuu currently holds a 4.8/5.0 rating, which I’m very proud of - thanks a lot to every single one of you! It’ll get even better, I promise. :-)

Exactly what I was looking for and a bit more..... All the video players I've tried on my Lenovo K1 Ideapad just give you an ugly list with a screenshots of the video files. This separates movies and TV shows, adds cover art and uses IMDb for reviews and backdrops. When you hit play just select your favorite video player as default and you're set. — SaDiin

The best at what it does. Haven't yet found an app similar to this, for me it's the best one at what it does. Of course there are still things that could be added, but the application is being worked upon heavily and the developer listens and responds to questions or requests very quickly, so I'm sure it'll get even better. Definitely five stars from me :) — Natan Žabkar

One of the prime Honeyomb apps. It's an amazing feat that a lone developer can do better work than most dev teams. I've followed this guy since his beta on XDA, and look at him and his app now. Perfectly showcases Android's ability to provide indie devs to show their talent by offering powerful tools and near-complete freedom to generate an incredible app such as this. Excellent support, fast and accurate movie/TV listing, beautiful interface, support for multiple codecs. Highly recommended. — JJ

Excellent App! This is a great looking and very functional movies and tv organising app. Thank you for the good support and regular new features and updates. — Kenneth
